Becoming Like Jesus by David Qaoud
How do we become more like Christ?
I’m going to give you the answer right away: we become like Jesus by beholding him, not by imitating him.
Paul writes to the Corinthians, “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed. . .” (2 Corinthians 3:18).
Do you know what it means to behold something? It means to look at; to see; to observe; to view. Paul wants the Corinthians to be amazed at what Jesus has done for them. He wants them to stare at the glory of God until they see it. And and in the midst of doing that, they become more like Christ. That’s how transformation happens: by being amazed at the Person and work of Jesus Christ.
In our Christian culture, we often stress obeying but we rarely encourage beholding. The popular saying in our culture is “What would Jesus do?”. That’s great, but before we think about “What would Jesus do?” let’s be amazed at “What has Jesus done?”. Before we get caught up in the work of God, let’s be amazed at the God of work. Astonishment of the gospel should always precede activity for the gospel.
“I looked at Christ, and the dove of peace flew into my heart. I looked at the dove. . . and it flew away.” – Charles Spurgeon
Look at Christ and you will change. And you can bet on that.
